Why is it bad to stir a solution with a thermometer during a lab experiment?

I know you are supposed to use something that is meant for stirring, but what’s wrong with using a thermometer?

  1. Thermometer’s are made of very thin glass and if you crack the bottom of the thermometer, all the mercury will leak out which is highly toxic.. oh.. and it would ruin your experiement!
