What’s the difference between a candy thermometer and a regular food one?

Can a regular one be used as a candy thermometer?

  1. Candy thermometers have a very large range, and have very precise measurements (usually by 5 degree increments as opposed to 10).

Unless you have a regular thermometer that can go into a deep fryer (which candy thermometers can do, as they double as deep fryer thermometers if you’re making a deep fryer out of a pot and oil), I would recommend going and buying on just to be safe. Candy thermometers usually only run a few bucks for the non fancy ones.
