Cooking used to be a challenge for many women, a science and an art that one has to learn and master for years. Modern technology, however, has made cooking easier and less time-consuming. Digital cooking thermometers are one such advancement and their creation has definitely helped in reducing the number of burnt and overcooked turkeys in Thanksgiving.

How Can a Digital Cooking Thermometer Help?

Using a digital cooking thermometer is akin to having an alarm clock for your cooking. All you have to do is watch the cooking thermometer or wait for it to sound an alarm until it reaches the specified temperature. When that happens, you can take out the dish you’ve prepared and be assured that it’s not a second undercooked or overcooked.

Types of Digital Cooking Thermometers

There are several kinds of digital cooking thermometers sold in the market and your cooking can only improve more with the right choice of cooking equipment.

Oven Cord

With this kind of cooking thermometer, you won’t even have to open the oven door to know the temperature of your dish. A metal cord connects the thermometer’s probe to a base unit. When the probe comes into contact with the food, it will be able to measure its temperature and the resulting digits will then be displayed on the digital screen of the base unit.

The base unit may be magnet-attached to the oven door or stove top of the oven. If not, you may simply find it on top of the oven counter. There are also digital cooking thermometers of this ilk that are designed for use with stove-cooked foods. Oven cord digital cooking thermometers cannot, however, be calibrated.

Thermocouple digital cooking thermometers are the quickest to show the final temperature, requiring only two to five seconds for displaying the temperature. This kind of cooking thermometer is ideal to use when you’re cooking large-sized or a considerable quantity of food and the temperature may vary from one side or place to another.

They are best used when ongoing cooking preparations are about to reach its end. They are also ideal for thin ingredients or foods like chicken breasts, pork chops, and hamburger patties. Thermocouple digital cooking thermometers can be calibrated and you must do so often to ensure consistently accurate readings. The only disadvantage to using this kind of cooking thermometer is the fact that you can’t keep it next to the food until its estimated completion time.

Thermistor digital cooking thermometers do not use thin probes like thermocouple thermometers to measure temperature. Rather, it utilizes resistors with thicker probes and not all models can be calibrated to ascertain consistently accurate readings. It does however share other similarities with thermocouple thermometers such as its ability to measure temperature for thin foods and its inability to remain for long periods of time with the food being prepared.

Fork Combination

Finally, we have digital cooking thermometers which are made from a combination of food thermometer and coking for. They are also known as thermometer forks and may use either thermistors or thermocouples to measure temperature.

The digital display screen of a thermometer is located at its handle. Temperature readings however can take quite some time, producing results from two to ten seconds. Lights on thermometer fork will also indicate whether the dish is already well done, medium, or just rare.

According to the USDA, the safest and surest gauge to ensure that food has been cooked sufficiently is temperature. Quite often, the more traditional color and texture tests do not suffice and are not enough assurance that the food has indeed reached its desired state. With digital cooking thermometers, the guesswork is taken away.

All about digital cooking thermometers

About 10 years ago, the most prevalent type of cooking thermometer was the liquid-filled type, basically a narrow glass cylinder filled with a liquid. This liquid rose and fell depending on the temperature. It was the basic thermometer calibrated to work for kitchen use.

A digital cooking thermometer, on the other hand, uses sensors to take the temperature and then displays it using a small indicator, usually an LCD panel. Compared to the more traditional liquid-type thermometer, the digital type allows for a more accurate reading because the temperature is displayed as figures or numbers.

Advantages of a digital cooking thermometer

Digital thermometers are the frequent favorites for cooking jobs that require continuous readings, although there are some models that are designed to work as instant-read types. Either way, their functionality allows for a more convenient and reliable way to monitor and determine cooking temperature.

Digital cooking thermometers also come as wireless types or wired probe types that are connected to a receiver kept away from the source of heat. The receiver provides the readout of the temperature, along with information about other settings. These cooking thermometers are excellent for use for taking food temperature or oven temperature. The capacity for taking high temperatures can range from a low of 200F to around 450F, enough for making accurate gauges for different cooking methods such as grilling, roasting and baking.
