Is the pop up timer in a turkey accurate?

I have a turkey in today, almost 20 lbs. According to the cooking charts it should have taken 4 1/2 hours to cook but the pop up timer thingy went off at three hours (at 350 degrees). I don’t have a meat thermometer to check. How can I tell if it’s really done?

  1. The legs should move easily without forcing. Also, stick a long fork into the thigh of the turkey and check the juices. The thigh takes the longest to cook. If the juices are clear (no tinge of pink) the turkey should be done. Let it rest for 15 minutes before carving. I find that those pop up timers are not very accurate, but you may be in luck. Buy a meat thermometer for next time.
